Hands-on questions ask you to perform real tasks on a live system instead of picking an option on screen, and on cloud and virtualization exams they range from an occasional interactive item to entire exams that contain no multiple choice at all. Which end of that range you meet depends entirely on the vendor and the track.

Which Cloud Certification Exams Are Hands-On
Red Hat’s EX-series exams — such as EX200 for RHCSA and EX280 for OpenShift — are performance-based from end to end: you are handed tasks and a live environment, and you are graded on whether the resulting system works, never on an option you selected. A small number of other tracks embed interactive or lab-style items alongside multiple choice. By contrast, AWS, VMware VCP, HashiCorp, and Azure and Google associate exams present multiple-choice and multiple-response items, some drawn from case studies. So the honest answer is that hands-on formats are real but specific to the vendors that use them, rather than a feature of the whole vertical.
Preparing for Practical Cloud Exam Tasks
For a fully practical exam, nothing replaces working on a real environment: building, configuring, and verifying until the steps are second nature. What a multiple-choice tool can still sharpen is the reasoning layer beneath the keystrokes — which command achieves a goal, the order the steps must run in, and why one approach is correct where another quietly fails — so that the conceptual and command-level knowledge is solid before you sit at a live console.
